Shovel Knight Specter of Torment & Treasure Trove Releasing First on Switch
We reported on the gameplay of Specter of Torment just hours ago and it looks really promising but Yacht Club Games released a press statement for Nintendo Switch’s digging good adventure releasing in March.
Get ready for Shovel Knight Co-op using Joy-Cons, Specter of Torment, Body Swap Mode, new challenge stages, new feats, and more on your new Nintendo Switch!! The other consoles and standalone versions will follow suit in April (dates to be confirmed once submitted and approved by platform holders).
Specter of Torment and the Treasure Trove release (which will offer EVERY future and currently released expansion) will release first on the Nintendo Switch in March and will come out on everything else the following month. Yacht Club Games offered a clear reasoning for this decision however.
The number of platforms and regions we’re shooting for makes it impossible to shoot for all platforms simultaneously. Since we are such a small team, we need to stagger the releases. Fortunately, Nintendo has really been helping our submission and testing process so we can release as early as possible!
This makes sense to focus on the Nintendo Switch for a few reasons.
- It’s the newest platform the studio has to bring not only the Specter of Torment Campaign but also the entire Shovel Knight experience to
- Switch is launching soon and they can ride off the ‘new’ factor that the system’s launch can offer
- Nintendo is helping Yacht Club Games get the game to the platform and that is freeing up development costs for the studio
So while this decision can annoy people on the other platforms (specifically backers of the game’s Kickstarter), there is logic to this move.
